With over 10000 heirloom varieties of tomatoes available, it is easy to understand why growing them becomes an obsession. But how do you choose between so many tremendous varieties?

I have been growing heirloom varieties for many years now, so I do have my personal favourites - Aunt Ruby's German Green, for example. In 2008 I was blown away by the flavour of Green Doctors, a wonderful little green cherry, the taste and size of Sylvan Gaume and Franchi- Red Pear. I am a believer in Tom Wagners creations, including of course Green Zebra, and excited about the whole line of boars/hogs and hoofs coming from Brad Gates. It is an exciting time to be a lover of heirloom tomatoes! I have referred to books by individuals who have devoted a great deal of time in growing and comparing the many varieties. Some varieties I have included are highly recommended by Dr. Carolyn Male, in her book"100 Heirloom Tomatoes for the American Garden", as well as Amy Goldmans' artistic "The Heirloom Tomato".

This year it may appear I am growing fewer varieties, with a mere 100 distinct varieties on my listing. In actual fact my collection now consists of more than 600 varieties and clearly listing them all and trying to keep them all straight for preorders is an overwhelming task. The 100 on the list are all exceptional , but if you need to have more choice it is possible by an in-person visit to the farm or market.

All transplants are grown in 3-4" pots, are grown "non-certified" organically and are fully hardened off and ready to go in your garden when weather permits. My transplants are strong and healthy and with proper care and conditions, should produce a harvest of tasty summer tomatoes...the way tomatoes used to taste. Now, what to choose?
